Suez Environment expresses its commitment to sustainable development through 4 major priorities, grouped into 12 specific commitments connected with its activities. Priority 1: Conserve resources and promote the circular economy
  • Optimise waste recycling and recovery rates by increasing, in the waste flows Suez Environment manage, the proportion of re-used, recycled or recovered waste in the form of new materials, in order to minimise the impact of the products’ life cycles.
  • Increase the yield of drinking water networks and reduce leaks in order to prevent wastage of a precious resource.
Priority 2: Innovate to meet environmental challenges
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions (tonnes of CO2 equivalent) and therefore contributing to combat global warming.
  • Improve energy efficiency through all operations by decreasing the energy intensity required by their operations
  • Increase and promote renewable energy generation by Energy-from-Waste plants, waste water sludge and landfill biogas.
  • Incorporate biodiversity in site management, by setting up action plans on sensitive sites, and by sharing in national and regional biodiversity conservation policies.
Priority 3: Make their employees sustainable development actors
  • Foster professional knowledge by an ongoing effort in terms of training, and in particular by giving their employees the means to be involved in improving their Sustainable Development
  • Improve safety and health in the workplace by a pro-active policy to reduce risks, backed by the reduction in accident frequency and severity rates.performance.
  • Support diversity among company employees.
Priority 4:  Build their development with all their stakeholders
  • Maintain an active dialogue with their stakeholders by regularly organising conciliation meetings at all the relevant levels, in order to improve the correlation between corporate strategy and the expectations of civil society.

Progress Report

Suez Environnement

  • In 2010, Suez Environment improved its recycling rate for household and non-hazardous industrial waste to 36.8% against 31.9%14 in 2009.
  • In 2010, Suez Environment decreased the network linear loss index from 9.7 to 9.5 cubic m/km/day, which represents water savings of about 11 million cubic meters for 2010, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 220,000 people17.
  • In 2010, the percentage of waste landfilled in facilities equipped with a biogas collection and treatment system (commitment 3) rose from 84 to 91.
  • The greenhouse gas emissions and the Group’s contribution to the avoided emissions estabilised at ~ 6.2 million tonnes CO2 equivalent.
  • The Group was deeply involved in “the Year of Biodiversity” and published a brochure  outlining its contribution to the preservation and restoration of biodiversity through its various business lines.
  • Suez Environment increased the average annual number of training hours per employee from 12.9 in 2009 to 14.522 in 2010 and is now closer to its commitment of 15 hours of training per employee per year.
  • The frequency rate of workplace accidents reached 16.28 for the Group, a deterioration of  0.93 points compared with 2009.
  • In 2010, Suez Environment launched its “Equal opportunities, social development and commitment” DIVERSITY programme.
  • The Group is involved in boosting the social and economic development of the countries in which it operates and thus provides concrete answers to the problems of disadvantaged  people who are least likely to find a job.
