NOVA Chemicals

NOVA Chemicals believes that GHG solutions must both protect the environment and enable economic growth and its benefits—including reinvestment in new technology.NOVA Chemicals believes that sound environmental stewardship and the careful management of natural resources -- such as air, land and water -- simply make good business sense. They have now established companywide systems and procedures to ensure that they continuously improve their environmental performance and protect the well-being of local communities.
Since 2000, NOVA have been setting short- and long-term performance targets for a wide range of environmental indicators, including regulatory permit exceedences, hazardous waste, atmospheric emissions, spills and releases, and community complaints. Their companywide Responsible Care Council reviews NOVA's performance and establishes targets that help to drive continuous improvement throughout their operations.

NOVA Chemicals

  • In 2010, total (direct and indirect) GHG emissions from chemical facilities increased overall by 443 kt carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2E).  This increase, about 11.3% more than the 2009 amounts, is still 9.8% (474 kt) lower than their 2003 total GHG emissions.  The corresponding total GHG emissions intensity (kilotonnes CO2E/kt of high value chemicals [HVC] produced) increased from 0.72 in 2009 to 0.75 in 2010.  This 2010 intensity level is 9.7% lower than the 2003 level.
  • They have reduced their direct GHG emissions intensity from their chemical facilities by almost  18% in the 1999 to 2010 time frame.
  • They now estimate our direct GHG emissions intensity from their chemical facilities will be reduced by an additional 20% by 2020.
